From being Netflix’s biggest show ever to scoring international awards, “Squid Game” remains unbeatable by continuing to prove its dominance worldwide.
Google released its 2021 Year in Search, a list of top trending topics that created a massive buzz over the year.
It includes the most searched words on Google globally covering entertainment, sports and more.
‘Squid Game’ is 2021’s Most Googled TV Show
For 2021, South Korea’s survival-themed series starring Lee Jung Jae, Park Hae Soo, Jung Ho Yeon and Wi Ha Joon ranked first place as Google’s most-searched TV show.
“Squid Game” once again defeated the American period drama series “Bridgerton,” ranking at second place.
The third most searched TV show on Google is the Marvel-based miniseries “WandaVision,” followed by “Cobra Kai” and “Loki” at fourth and fifth place.
To recall, this is not the first time that the nine-part series surpassed “Bridgerton.”
At the height of the “Squid Game” mania, Netflix announced that the South Korean series ousted the period drama as most-watched show on the streaming site after being viewed by 111 million users during its first 28 days compared to “Bridgerton” with 82 million.
On top of it, the streaming giant also named the psychological thriller series as their “biggest show ever.”
Going back to the 2021 Year in Search as cited by Google, Marvel took the top spot of most searched movies for the year after “Eternals,” “Black Widow,” “Shang-Chi,” and the “Legend of the Ten Rings” ranked first place to fourth place respectively.
As for celebrities, Alec Baldwin got first place as Google’s most searched actor, while Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” is the top trending song of 2021.
‘Squid Game’ Scored Major Categories at Two International Awards
The “Squid Game” cast did not go home empty-handed after bagging trophies at the 2021 People’s Choice Awards and at the Gotham Awards 2021.
In November, the Lee Dong Hyuk directed series took home their first international award for winning Breakthrough Series – Long Format and defeating the British drama “It’s a Sin,” “The Underground Railroad,” “Small Axe,” Ethan Hawke’s “The Good Lord Bird,” and HBO’s satirical comedy-drama “The White Lotus.”
Lee Jung Jae was also nominated for Outstanding Performance in a New Series but lost to American actor Ethan Hawke.
The “Squid Game’s” latest achievement is scoring the title of Binge-Worthy Show at the 2021 People’s Choice Awards and beating its fellow contenders “Cobra Kai,” “Loki,” “Sex/Life,” “Outer Banks,” “Ted Lasso,” “The White Lotus,” and the crime drama “Mare of Easttown.”
Adding to the Netflix series’ achievement list is earning a nod at the Critics Choice Awards 2021 for multiple categories. It includes Best Drama Series, Best Foreign Language Series and Best Actor for Lee Jung Jae.
With several awards and nominations, media outlets predicted that “Squid Game” is eligible to enter the prestigious Emmy Awards.
